The former Carmelite Convent

The name Les Grands Carmes preserves the memory of the Carmelite convent founded in the 14th century. Over the centuries, the site has housed a religious community, educational facilities, a fire station, a conservatory and judicial offices. Today, that history continues through a new hotel open to the city. The listed buildings, courtyards, passageways and sightlines have been preserved and reinterpreted, retaining the site’s identity while giving it new life.

Under the light of Aix-en-Provence

Founded around its thermal springs, Aix-en-Provence has cultivated a special relationship with light and well-being for more than two thousand years. Les Grands Carmes draws on this heritage through arches, curves and perspectives that recall the ancient thermal baths. Lime-finished walls, inspired by the colors of Cézanne’s studio, capture the Provençal light and come alive throughout the day. Wood, stone, linen, travertine, chrome and natural materials create a deliberately understated, warm palette.

A unique place in the heart of the city

The 42 rooms and suites extend this soothing simplicity, designed as retreats in the heart of Aix-en-Provence: oak floors, lime-washed walls, natural materials and omnipresent light. Some rooms open onto Place de Verdun and the Palais de Justice, others onto the leafy patio or the exterior of the house. In the bathrooms, arches, niches and mineral volumes gently reinterpret the thermal heritage of Aix-en-Provence.

Exploring Aix-En-Provence in a different way

An ideal base for discovering Aix-en-Provence and Provence from a fresh perspective, the hotel offers experiences rooted in the region: a Provençal lunch or afternoon treat at Café Verdun, a stroll through the patio, a dinner celebrating Mediterranean classics or a relaxing moment at the L’Occitane spa.

Our team shares its favorite places and itineraries: Cézanne’s studio, the Musée Granet, Provençal markets, Fontenille Collection hotels from the Luberon to Marseille, local wine estates, Luberon villages, Sainte-Victoire mountain and the calanques of Marseille and Cassis.

With each stay, Les Grands Carmes invites you to explore a Provence full of life, with its natural beauty, culture, gastronomy and well-being.
